St Peter's Church

  • June 2025 Diary
  • May 2025 Diary

St Peter's Church, with parts dating back to mediaeval times, stands right in the heart of the village, a visible reminder of many hundreds of years of worship there. The Church is part of the wider Blyth Valley Team Ministry, and regular services are held there on most Sundays. A Eucharist service takes place at least once a month, and also "Pause for Thought", a more informal service of reflection. In normal times all services are followed by refreshments, giving those attending an opportunity to meet and chat over coffee.

Many villagers have links to the Church through baptism, weddings and funerals. On All Souls Day in November the Church invites people to visit and light a candle in remembrance of a loved one who has died.

Again in normal times the Church is open each day for people to visit and make use of the quiet space. It also occasionally hosts art and music events, and has an enthusiastic team of bell ringers. The Organ is over 200 years old, and was moved to Wenhaston in the early 1950's from Marylebone Old Chapel in London, when that was demolished following bomb damage in WW2. It is thought possible that Nelson himself might have heard this Organ when it was first built.

Many visitors from far and wide come to visit the extraordinary 'Doom' painting, a world famous survivor which so nearly was lost for ever but for a showerof rain! It is a wonderful example  - almost unique in the way it is painted on boards rather than one panel - of the mediaeval vision of the Day of Judgment.

Visitors are encouraged to give a donation to ensure the Church can stay open to visitors at all times. As well as cash donations, a contactless giving terminal is now inside the Church, or visitors can use a QR code on their smartphone to donate.
