Inspired by Becker Art Society

Since 2013, St.Peter's Church, Wenhaston, Suffolk, has been the lovely setting for a unique exhibition: “INSPIRED BY BECKER”.

Harry Becker lived here from 1913 to 1924 after training in the best schools in Europe. He was probably the last artist of note to record the work of UK farm labourers before the advent of the tractor, giving importance to lives that would have been regarded as unremarkable. He worked out in the field, giving “powerful testimony to the value of painting from direct observation”.

His work is: “compelling, lively and spontaneous. Simply, and swiftly executed and wonderfully evocative of light, it has a truthfulness and artistic integrity.”

The exhibition raises awareness of his work, by presenting contemporary art which is “Inspired by Becker” and made by artists from across East Anglia. Since the first exhibition in 2013, we have been overwhelmed and delighted with the support both from artists wanting to exhibit and from the public.

The Inspired by Becker Art Society, will run future exhibitions, continuing our celebration of Wenhaston's connection to Harry Becker. Artist members can enjoy sketching throughout the year in our plein air sketch group, and we'd love also to hear from anyone who'd like to support this event.
