Wenhaston with Mells is part of the Blyth Valley CFR scheme together with Blythburgh and Walberswick. Community First Responders respond to emergency calls on behalf of the East of England Ambulance Service in our communities.
In particular, calls that involve cardiac arrest (over 150,000 in the UK each year), stroke, breathing difficulties, patients that have fallen and other similar emergencies, are passed to the CFRs. It is important that a rapid response is made is such circumstances.
CFRs are trained by the ambulance service in enhanced first-aid, the use of a defibrillator, oxygen and other life-saving equipment. We are always in need of additional volunteers for this very important public service.
When a person calls 999, the CFR are notified of the emergency by ambulance control via mobile phone. As they live or work in that area, they should arrive before the ambulance and be able to treat the patient. Once the ambulance crew arrive, they are them able to return to their normal daily routine. The few minutes they spend with the patient could help to save a life.
